SYLLABUS. Contents.

Syllabus Content

Teaching is divided into modules and courses according to their training objectives in connection with the development of disciplinary skills (knowing) and professional (skills), in line with the objectives of the master's degree.

a) First semester (common)

A series of compulsory subjects are taught whose aim is to deepen in several aspects associated with materials engineering: to know, design, build, operate and manage materials. A total of 30 ECTS credits must be completed. These modules place the student in touch with the latest technologies and knowledge in the field of materials, facilitating application to real engineering situations. The content is as follows:

  • Technical analysis and materials characterisation (microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy, and mechanical testing techniques among others).
  • Design, modelling and manufacture of the materials (numerical methods of calculation, modelling properties, macro -micro modelling, and modelling manufacturing processes).

This content is developed through subjects entailing between 3 and 6 ECTS credits.

Depending on their Bachelor's degree at the enrollement, students may be compelled to take an additional pre-requisite subject (3 ECTS) to ensure an homogeneous level of knowledge.

The following table provides more details about first semester subjects.

b) Second semester

Study of materials engineering requires a multidisciplinary and multi-purpose training, so that students may grasp the fundamentals and applications of materials in their major fields of action. Consequently, the master's degree is divided into two itineraries, which are relevant to specialisation.

In each itinerary, students must take a total of 27 ECTS compulsory credits.

However, to achieve the 30 ECTS required during the second semester, the students have to chose one subject (3 ECTS) among the compulsory subjects from the other itinerary. Students are recommended to check the timetables of the second semester for choosing such subject, since timetables do not guarantee that every subject from the other itinerary is compatible with the chosen itinerary.

  • Itinerary A: Master in Materials Engineering, Structural Materials
  • Itinerary B: Master in Materials Engineering, Functional Materials

SUBJECTS OFFERED DURING THE SECOND (SPRING) SEMESTER. These subjects depend on the itinerary.

c) Master's thesis

The master's thesis will be done during the third semester, after completing the two modules of studies and will have 30 ECTS credits. It will seek the implementation and practice of the knowledge obtained throughout the drgree to solve a specific practical case, where the student makes full use of the skills (scientific, technological, and social) acquired. It can be done in companies or research centres either in Spain or in another country, and be written and presented in English or Spanish.

That work entails professional specialisation, targeting a product or service, science and technology, or the initiation in science, under the supervision of supervisor.

It will have the following objectives:

  • Place the student in contact with real problems associated with materials engineering
  • Plan and implement the skills set included in the objectives of the degree
  • Show evidence of decision-making when facing a real problem

In order to do this, students will be required to develop a capacity to integrate their knowledge creatively, acquire skills in reporting, and show understanding to the organisation of an industrial process in relation to materials that respect the environment.
